Nathan Salsburg's guitar maintains its precise but soothing lull throughout "Over and Even", the title track from Joan Shelley's second album. "We sight the mornings softly/ Take to them easy," sings the Kentucky resident, as a loose banjo strum strokes the periphery like leaves brushing her sanctuary window. "The scent of the wood and coffee/ Our cup is filling." She sings elegantly and then more forcefully, as if to stretch out her morning muscles. As glimmering sounds lift the steady guitar, Salsburg and Shelley create the sense of a private early routine—the kind of fiercely maintained, head-sorting series of events that we read about in interviews with writers and artists, but that real life rarely makes time for.
