Katie Dey’s music has rarely been peaceful. Even in the quiet moments of her sophomore album, 2016’s Flood Network, the Melbourne artist's pop shuddered with electronic distortion and decay, a glitchiness that suggested downloads from a corrupted hard drive. But her songs also have an inherent warmth and uplifting melodies—and her new track, “Data,” is one of her calmest and most peaceful releases yet.

Painfully vulnerable, ”Data” finds Dey singing about the cloud—the strange, nebulous void where our data is kept—over spare, simple piano. Her voice is strong and bright, imbuing the cryptic lyrics with emotional weight. “Hold it on your servers, hold it on your drives/My data,” sings Dey, elongating the last word so it stretches over a bed of piano and tinny background echoes. Dey’s analogues have always been other creators of demented bedroom pop like (Sandy) Alex G, but “Data” is pure Kate Bush homage. Dey’s vocals carry the same world-weariness of Bush’s best performances, and give the same impression of stillness and calm that she often imbued more tumultuous songs with. Dey may be a restless experimenter, but “Data” finds peace in new terrain.
