On Vancouver band Mode Moderne's first record, 2009’s Ghosts Emerging, vocalist Philip Intile channeled Ian Curtis’ voice and mood on tracks like “Les Neuf Soeurs” as he sang, fittingly, “I cannot live that way/ I’d rather die.” On others, his band trafficked in the shoegaze and dreampop melodies of East Coast peers like Beach Fossils and Wild Nothing. They continue to split the difference on their forthcoming record, Occult Delight, due in January. Sweetly melancholy single “Strangle the Shadows” crests to a simple guitar-driven throughline that’s familiar enough without being redundant. Intile sounds more hopeful, too: “Let’s hope he turns inside/ And strangles the shadows in his mind.”
