Caroline Polachek’s post-Pang singles have acted as disparate worlds, isolated scenes in a grand drama whose plot remains obscured. Her latest song, “Sunset,” is a ways away from both the humid bounce of 2021’s “Bunny Is a Rider” and the choral grandeur of February’s “Billions.” Over a plexus of warm Spanish guitar and handclaps, Polachek describes a romance she’s overthought, but nevertheless runs towards with abandon: “Forever fearless/And in your arms, a warm horizon/Don’t look back, let’s ride away,” she sings in a fast, affected trill that’s curiously reminiscent of Shakira. Co-produced by Sega Bodega, the flamenco-indebted “Sunset” is accompanied by a music video of Polachek strolling through Barcelona; a shot of her typing out strings of “OooOoOoos” on her phone lightheartedly lampoons the piercing, operatic vocal flourishes in the song’s latter half.
