Oneohtrix Point Never’s Daniel Lopatin has spent the past few years continually challenging the limits and expectations of electronic music, from reappropriating and subsequently disintegrating 1980s pop textures to building sample-based collages and psychedelic sound sculptures. On “Zebra,” from the forthcoming R Plus Seven (out October 1 via Warp), Lopatin takes a machine-gun synth figure and adds elements with every repeated pass—droning synths, ringing cymbals, disembodied vocals, horn and string samples, and swirling washes of electronic noise—while keeping the central melody intact. Eventually, Lopatin compresses the synthesizer harmony to the point where dead clattering tones flicker against white noise. “Zebra” is a haunting exercise in sonic construction, as Lopatin has crafted something entrancingly kaleidoscopic.
