Here’s a word you don’t usually associate with J Mascis & friends: swagger. Even at their most triumphant, Dinosaur Jr. come off as shy and introspective; when Mascis usually lets fly with another rebar-melting guitar solo, it’s like an overcompensating apology for his lyrical and vocal sad-sackery. This time around, there are no such concerns. “I Want You to Know,” from forthcoming album Farm, hits the ground thudding, Murph and Lou Barlow filling the tune’s fat bottom with a healthy amount of swing (and, yes, swagger) as Mascis power-chords his blues away. Whatever Mascis is going on about underneath this cocksure mess is secondary. The confidence these guys exude sounds so fantastic, it’s almost a shame when the solo begins. In this song, the group’s got nothing to apologize for.
