First released four decades ago on R. Stevie Moore’s 1973 album Invites Comparison, “Sort of Way” has been given new life as part of Care in the Community’s forthcoming compilation Personal Appeal, out August 5. It’s a well-deserved revitalization, as the hook of the song’s rising chorus easily cuts through the years (even the over-modulated production doesn’t sound that dated, considering how popular lo-fi remains in indie circles). It’s a timeless example of Moore’s peculiar talent for crafting earworms that are both catchy and crazed, both structured and unbalanced. Especially distinctive are the strangled guitars, which commandeer the song’s final minute, piling into a rush of slash and jangle-- the kind that only Moore can make sound so irrationally good.
