One of the biggest changes of opinion I’ve ever had about an album.

don’t know how, but I gave this album a 6.5/10 the first time I heard it. Listening to it again now, after spending the last few months discovering and seriously listening to so much more music, it almost feels like I’m hearing a completely different record.

10/10.

Songs in the Key of Life is incredible. The musicianship, the arrangements, the melodies, the transitions between soul, funk, jazz and pop, and especially the way Stevie can move from love and joy to faith, inequality, pain and social issues without ever making the album feel disconnected. Considering its length and ambition, it’s remarkable how alive it feels from beginning to end.

Maybe the album didn’t change. Maybe my ears did.

And honestly, that might be my favorite part about going back to albums I once didn’t fully understand. Sometimes music simply finds you before you’re ready for it.
