Aaron Childs is the latest signee for Godmode, the Los Angeles indie label responsible for Yaeji and Shamir. Childs is the son of the jazz pianist Billy Childs and a natural-born crooner, but his debut single for Godmode, “Tangerine,” doesn’t even indicate a smidgen of his father’s genre. It’s warm with mellow R&B guitar strums and a lilting tropical beat, a flirtatious first meeting. The song’s like a young cousin to Miguel's “Coffee” or Frank Ocean's “Love Crimes,” suave and seductive like the former but cheeky and slightly bruised like the latter. A rumination on a failed relationship, its chorus makes for pretty immediate singalongs: “Tangerine, that's how it tastes when I think about you” he coos, like a subtle casanova. Before long, the track’s wash of distant guitars and echoing falsettos linger like the way the smell of citrus sticks beneath your fingernails. “Tangerine” is a fun, tantalizing snack—a coy offering en route to Childs’ first big outing.
