Together, the Internet producer Matt Martian and Odd Future co-founder and rapper Pyramid Vritra work as the production duo the Jet Age of Tomorrow. Their worldview is modern funk, and it’s often filtered through a mild haze of psychedelica. Their new song, “Fly Like Me,” is mostly instrumental and sounds like a lazy daze. An entire suite of soft and swaying synths murmur over a snappy drum break, the only thing keeping the track boxed in. Martian and the guest vocalist MarkUsFree share a falsetto mantra of a hook: “I know you really, really wanna fly like me/All you gotta do is spread your wings.” It’s a floating, low-stakes jam until the second half of the song switches lanes and drills down into buzzing rave fare. The change-up is almost too aggressive, plummeting the vibe of the song and casting the producers in a darker light, as if to suggest that they’re not always grazing carelessly in the clouds. After all, it’s always a crash coming down from that type of high.
