The Independents’ “Leaving Me” was a song-of-the-summer contender for its genre way back in 1973. The tender, falsetto-led ballad topped Billboard’s R&B chart that May, and the magazine’s “Soul Sauce” columnist named it in a roundup of songs “pouring out of portable radio all along the nation’s beaches and lakefronts.”

Well, the more things change, the more you-know-how-it-goes: New Jersey- and Brooklyn-hailing producer Flamingosis has flipped the original—sung, incidentally, by Chuck Jackson, younger brother of the civil-rights activist Jesse Jackson—into a new type of summer anthem. “Believe in Me” modifies the title sentiment, capitalizing on the words’ similar sounds, and bolsters the original with thicker rhythms. But what may be most impressive is how much Flamingosis holds back, wisely letting Jackson and company speak for him, in the language of endless warmth.
