In a few months, Dutch-Sudanese R&B singer Gaidaa has exhibited an impressive range of sound and mood. She sang in English and Arabic on her first single, “Morning Blue,” a somber call for peace in Sudan made hopeful by twinkling production and dreamy vocal layers. On her follow-up, “I Like Trouble,” Gaidaa questioned exclusionary systems and found growth through struggle as the song slowly morphed from intimate R&B to hazy electronica.

Introduced by scampering percussion and a syncopated bass line, “Falling Higher,” her latest single, immediately establishes an irresistible groove. The instrumentals tumble forward, reflecting Gaidaa’s struggle to reach for something just out of grasp: “I’ve been wanting more than I can even handle,” she sings. Her yearning to find emotional resolution is mirrored by a new vocal delivery—she flits between her usual velvety tenor and a gorgeous, raspy falsetto, yet she manages to sound completely focused in her pursuit.
