When a relationship ends, it's common to talk about picking over its carcass as if it's a dead and dessicated thing. But on "Nest," Rainbow Chan prefers to remember a failed romance as the sensual buffet it was: "You'll only remind me of bubblegum and ice cream kisses in the sun," sings the Sydney-based, Hong Kong-raised producer. "Just for a little while I built a nest for you/ You explored the colors of my plumage."-=-=-=-

Consider "Nest" her fanned peacock tail: Its bright, percolating chirrup recalls Solange's "Losing You" if it had been produced by Cape Town's John Wizards, and Chan's soulful, multi-tracked vocals radiate sunny warmth. And yet: "But I'm not enough for you," she repeats with a powerful remorse, as the beat tightens and snaps a little harder. "I'm not enough to make your feathers new/ I'm not enough to make you feel good." The nourishing vibrancy of "Nest" makes that kinda hard to believe.
