Swedish techno duo Boeoes Kaelstigen are Tor Rauden Källstigen and Leo Nathorst-Böös, who mostly traffic in minimal, near-future electronic music. Their visions of said future tend toward the dystopian, with songs so cool and sharp they feel untouched by human hands; when vocalists manage to make an appearance, they’re usually lamenting the sorry state of the world they inhabit. It’s within this specific context that new single “Be the Lights,” a collaboration with singer/producer Name the Pet, is a shocking turn: it’s a warm, straightforward piece of synth-pop, not far from the work of Robyn or Röyksopp. “Be the Lights” is palpably heartbroken, but that’s still a step forward for Boeoes Kaelstigen—it’s exciting to hear they have a heart at all.
