Yellow Days—aka 19-year-old British artist George van den Broek— recently soundtracked the Season 2 trailer for “Atlanta.” The featured song, “Gap in the Clouds,” is propulsive and dreamy rock, but it’s van den Broek’s deep, crinkly vocals that made it so gripping. It helped the trailer convey the show’s surreal nature, building the evident anticipation and intrigue. On his new single, “The Way Things Change,” he again contrasts nonchalance with anxiety, making music that’s as dark as it is chilled out.

From the beginning, van den Broek’s deep voice is able to convey a sense of churning unease: “My friends think my soul is dead/But I’m just trapped in my own head,” he sings. Choppy synths, syncopated guitar, and crisp drums engulf his voice, as he goes on to mourn the inevitability of loss. His slurred vocals paired with the slow, warbling backing instrumentals infuse the song with a sense of tranquility. “You keep going,” he croons throughout the chorus, a simple, reassuring phrase. He may sing about feeling trapped in his own head, but with “The Way Things Change,” van den Broeck’s resilience shines through.
