The most charming thing about People Get Ready's "Middle Name" is its simplicity. Produced by Jherek Bischoff at a century-old farmhouse in upstate New York, the band (featuring one of David Byrne's former dancers and guitarists, along with an ex-member of Yeasayer) recorded in four separate rooms of a house in upstate New York to capture its sense of space in their debut, self-titled LP. Calm pervades "Middle Name", which starts as a poised arrangement of organ and nervous shakers, a zippy little electric guitar figure gradually loosening things up to let emotion permeate the tight arrangement. So sings Steven Reker, "I try to change/ My heart, it stays the same."
