Quilt's forthcoming third album came together serendipitously. As they toured North America, the Boston four-piece found themselves capturing fragments of songs in voice memos and reel-to-reel tapes along the way. A chance meeting in Oregon turned into a proper recording opportunity, and Plaza was born. That looseness beams through “Eliot St.”—though its gorgeous, perfectly calibrated arrangements bely it, too—as Quilt's dozy strum and flowing strings romanticize Shane Butler's rueful lyrics about how we elude commitment so easily. It's a huge step up from last year's Held in Splendor, showing off a similar depth of plainspoken expression to Real Estate. “It takes some time, tinsel and ivy, dear, my love,” Butler sings, perfectly capturing the way that celebrations dot slowly wrought unions.
