If the expectations for Atra Mors, the new, fifth album by funeral doom pioneers Evoken out July 31 on Profound Lore, consist of low-slung, slow-motion, no-frills quakes, "Descent into Chaotic Dream" summarizes exactly what else the New Jersey squad has returned to offer-- a revisionary revitalization of the way this band behaves. Twinkling lightly at the start and soaring dramatically at the close, these 11 minutes certainly employ Evoken's deliberate crush but don't depend upon it. Coloring the lurch, sheets of texture suggestive of a dozen Touch Records masterminds push these cliffs toward the clouds. From above and below, they light the load without making Evoken, well, lighter.
