In 1970, the New York artist Joe Brainard collaged together the extremes of his memory—the mundane juxtaposed to the profound—for a direct book-length prose-poem called I Remember. Line by line, he begins with "I remember". For example: "I remember the only time I ever saw my mother cry. I was eating apricot pie," or "I remember my first erections. I thought I had some terrible disease or something." Life's big and small moments are interrelated and similarly poignant, Brainard seems to say. And Bully singer/guitarist Alicia Bognanno takes a loud, likeminded approach on this sub-two-minute break-up blast.-=-=-=-

"I Remember" has a warm, blownout euphoria not dissimilar to Japandroids, a song for self-medicating like staring at the sun. "I remember getting too fucked up/ And I remember throwing up in your car," Bognanno yells, sculpting remnants—the ugly and pretty alike—of an old love. She wrings them out, expelling the smell of sheets, a box of letters, a naked photo, and "I remember all about your mom/ I remember what you do on Christmas." As she works herself up to the full-body, throat-scraping, soul-cleansing screams of a young Courtney Love, "I Remember" evokes the all-consuming nature of memory, even when it comes in spurts.
