Let's ignore, for a second, the minor sacrilege of Diddy bringing back both beats from "It's All About the Benjamins (Remix)" and letting Rick Ross rock the one from Biggie's verse. The major development on "Shot Caller (Remix)" is that French Montana gets solid verses from both Diddy and Ross and still totally owns his track. But then again, it's a song tailored exactly to his strengths. As Max B's one-time star pupil, French now carries the baton for the grimy and intoxicated yet charming and flirtatious melodic rapping that he and Max perfected across countless mixtapes. The beat here rides a laconic, smoky sax, which is the perfect foil for French's tossed off tale of a Summer Jam fling. Classiness rubbing up against seediness is in many ways the distillation of French's (and Max's) appeal, and that appeal hits so true on "Shot Caller (Remix)" that not even two callbacks to one of the greatest rap songs off all time can overshadow it.
