As one of the most agitated tracks on Ryuichi Sakamoto’s latest LP, “async” supplies the perfect foundation for Arca to hop on and stir up some of his trademark discomfort. Arca’s take on async’s title track isn’t so much a remix in the traditional sense; it’s more like a new creature grown around the bones of Sakamoto’s composition. While the two versions share a skittering anxiety, Arca’s rendition allows melodies to flourish in the spaces Sakamoto leaves open, with percussive slashes of plucked string instruments. Arca’s elegantly layered voice floods the song, while his lurching drums slow down the beat of the original, carving out a sense of looming dread in place of Sakamoto’s prickly nervousness. The tension of Sakamoto’s version was appropriate for a thriller flick, but Arca’s reimagining is a little more seductive and creepy. Overall, the fleshed-out sound of remix could be something Arca put together from scratch, but knowing it’s inspired by Sakamoto lends some insight into Arca’s process: It reveals the energy he absorbs from his listening, and the subtle moments he chases down and expands upon, until what was borrowed is transformed.
