Ancient Future, the second full-length collaboration between Japanese pianist and mood master Ryuichi Sakamoto and California guitarist Christopher Willits, is out August 6 in the UK and Europe and the next day everywhere else via Ghostly. The collected pieces play like a series of dreams: tones float through a cloudless veil, wrapping past each other in phantasmagorical shapes, coming toward Earth but never quite touching down. "Completion," the final track, is an appropriately named and placed finale, then, its glowing wisps of sound steadily sinking back toward reality. Sakamoto's piano line seems to sharpen across these seven minutes, while a little past halfway, Willits' guitar playing begins to hew more toward melody than mood. It sounds like the brain slowly telling the eyes to open to the morning sun.
