Brooklyn's Dawn Of Midi were once classifiable as a traditional jazz trio, but now it's a bit trickier. Their 2010 debut, First, was an improvisational minimalist jazz album; on upcoming sophomore album Dysnomia (out August 6 via Thirsty Ear), every note and beat is obsessively notated. "Nix" is just one of nine "movements" in the 46-minute continuous piece of music, but by itself it's a transfixing study in rhythmic obsession that sounds like the needle got stuck in the groove of an acoustic Can jam.
