When Vince Staples raps about love, it usually comes with a dose of cynicism. Love can be disheartening, as he deemed it on 2017’s Big Fish Theory—a never-ending series of self-interested prospects with shady motives. But, on “Yo Love,” Staples’ contribution to the soundtrack of Melina Matsoukas’ upcoming film Queen & Slim, he reveals a surprisingly gooey soft spot. “You ever thought about a daughter or a son?” he asks a paramour over gently strummed electric guitar and hi-hats. “You lookin’ for a Jason’s Lyric or a Love Jones?” Staples is joined by L.A. singer Mereba’s airy background vocals and a chorus and verse from 6lack, this year’s go-to for silken R&B guest verses. Here he taps into a sense of desperation, willing to “swing a knife” to keep his lover. Even so, “Yo Love”’s indelibly syrupy vibe fits easily in the bedroom, with a charming swerve from Staples that’s only further proof of the rapper’s chameleonic talents.
