Local Natives' Hummingbird is an album of lofty and fully realized ambition, so it's understandable that they've allowed themselves some relief by messing with the raw materials. A few months back, the band restructured the chaotic drum barrage "Wooly Mammoth" into "Wooly Robot", and now vocalist Kelcey Ayer's defragmented Hummingbird's opening track "You & I", retaining the original's slowly boiling intensity , as well as Ayer's keening melody. This time around, the song's central lyric is "We were always strong," but as Local Natives reach outside their established mien of harmonized, orchestral grandeur to experiment with unfamiliar compositional tactics, it means more when Ayer sings about "Places we don't know."
