Taken from the Detroit band’s debut record

Isolation only becomes a negative when you let it. The members of Bonny Doon are all too familiar with this truism on “What Time Is It in Portland?”. After playing in Detroit punk bands like Tyvek, Growwing Pains, and PRC, they formed Bonny Doon to express their collective loneliness through the guise of comforting front porch country rock. Sunny guitars tangle themselves with ease. Vocal harmonies cushion the lyrics. It's breezy songwriting 101. “What Time Is It in Portland?” begins with the whirring of a tape, a clumsy analog moment. “I act like I don’t know what to do," vocalist Bobby Colombo sings, detailing generations of friends he's detached himself from. “But only fools fight when they know they’re gonna lose.” Hidden keys and a tambourine mask hopeless lyrics about fighting for a long-distance relationship. He may not overcome solitude, but he confronts it, and that’s progress enough for someone strumming low-key songs all day.
