The mood is appropriately patient and nocturnal on "Waiting in the Night", the first single from Forest Fire's upcoming third LP, Screens (out September 2 in the UK and September 10 in the U.S. via FatCat). The cyclical synth lead is set to a retro-futurist "lunar" EQ, reverbed guitars waft like they're being pushed by a calm breeze, and Mark Thresher's voice barely rises above a whisper. It's a song that makes Forest Fire recall the coterie of bands who either worked with Dave Fridmann or took cues from his production tactics in the late 1990s and early '00s-- groups that created studio-intensive, computerized folk that interacted with electronics while still being wary of their effect on human nature.
