The Brooklyn-based DJ and producer Justin Cudmore is obsessed with the history of acid house, particularly the Chicago genre's gnarly, subaquatic tones produced by the Roland TB-303 Bass Line synthesizer (which can fetch thousands of dollars in online auctions). Even though the instrument hit the market over 35 years ago, and is now hard to find, Cudmore uses it heavily in his slippery club tracks. On his latest one, “Flirt,” he adds a dose of rocket fuel to this decades-old acid house recipe.

The atmosphere of “Flirt” is dense and spaced out: Effects ping-pong off each other and subtle drums mix together to create a disorienting mood. Cudmore distills the heavier aspects of acid into its track’s core: Its thumping four-to-the-floor beat, sharp hi-hats, and jackhammer groove give it the energy of a strobe light. But the rhythm’s intensity never feels punishing—instead, “Flirt” is a gliding trip through a starlit dancefloor, bringing Chicago’s past to Brooklyn’s present.
