Towards the end of their first run in 1993, Slowdive released an unassuming 12” single with two techno reinterpretations of “In Mind” from the 5 EP. Those scintillating remixes from Bandulu and Reload (aka Mark Pritchard and Tom Middleton) were the last non-album tracks the British shoegazers released for 23-years—until this week. Tasked with remixing the second single from their self-titled comeback, Berlin-based DJ Avalon Emerson offers a spacious techno take on the pop-leaning “Sugar for the Pill.” Stretching the four minute original to a whopping nine, Emerson injects the ballad with an extraterrestrial palette: rubbery synths and squiggling textures that remove any sense of the original’s groundedness. Rachel Goswell’s backing vocal was a mere shadow on the original mix, but Emerson gives her voice center stage as it rings through the track in an echoing staccato. If “Sugar for the Pill” was a fragile, emotional vessel, Emerson’s “Gilded Escalation” is a metallic, protective bubble, floating in zero-gravity.
