As the songwriter behind the Bloomington, Indiana indie pop band Nice Try, Madeline Robinson tries to find hope in life’s uncertainties. In the early 2010s, under the solo moniker Madeline Ava, she did so quietly and tenderly. But when she began itching for a sonic shift and greater emotional range, Robinson formed the band Nice Try and amplified her own observations. This week, Nice Try released their second eponymous record (not to be confused with their 2016 self-titled tape). Among this infectious batch of earnest bops is “Angry,” a crisp outpour of anxiety and confusion.

After first appearing on the band’s 2013 debut EP, “Angry” has been tightened up without losing any of its emotional urgency. “Am I allowed to feel crazy?” Robinson nervously asks over thick guitar and basslines and heavy drums. “Am I allowed to get angry?” Her internal monologue barrels through fear, frustration, and, well, anger in one frenzied minute before reaching a painfully frank conclusion: “Sometimes I’m scared I wasn’t made for anything better.” “Angry” doesn’t provide any answers for escaping an emotional spiral, but it provides a great theme song for being lost in your feelings.
