Singer-songwriter Katy Morely’s career has been a process of constant reinvention. After studying neuroscience and painting in college, she decided to pursue music, spending four years living in Minneapolis writing, singing, and producing electronic beats while performing with the 22-member band Gayngs. She’s since relocated to L.A., and now writes solo material as Morly. On “Sleeping in My Own Bed,” off a recent EP of the same name, she shifts from beat-making to piano balladry: The acoustic turn foregrounds her rich vocals and emotional lyrics.

Underscored by cautious piano and jazzy percussion, Morly recounts memories of lost love and healing, describing the difference between her and her lover as the gap between opposing seasons. She initially wonders who she is without this love, doubt filling her lungs and subduing her voice. But, as she repeats the titular chorus over and over, she grows increasingly confident in her newfound autonomy, uplifted by a crowd of backing vocals. Following a breakup, feeling almost everything in the spectrum of emotions is inevitable, and on “Sleeping in My Own Bed,” Morly does her best to capture all those highs and lows.
