Brainfeeder signee Miguel Baptista Benedict's "Phemy" is a creeping minor-key instrumental that, initially, could very well put you in a "Twilight Zone" mood. When Bendict starts in with some loose piano loops, though, a sense of calm overtakes the creep, even though there’s no notable key changes. The instrumental takes on a comforting shape until the very end, when a beat skeleton echoes and paranoia returns, like a hand protruding from dirt in a cemetery. Benedict has described his music as a "sonic diary"; taking that into account, he must've been having a melancholy day when he made this one. "Phemy" could easily be considered a sketch, but for all its simplicity, it holds a surprising amount of emotional weight. Benedict's debut LP, Super(b)-Child-Ran, is out February 19.
