After years of releasing albums in Japan, the electronic composer Sugai Ken crosses over to America with UkabazUmorezU. The upcoming album—made from field recordings he took from “a local performing arts center” and “his daily surroundings”—is set to be released on New York experimental label RVNG. It’s a fitting home for the Kanagawa-based musician: Earlier this year, the label released Visible Cloaks’ sterling ambient electronic album Reassemblage, which took cues from Ken’s Japanese forebears.

“Wochikaeri to Uzume,” the first taste of UkabazUmorezU, drops us into a dizzying yet playful realm. There’s a fast-moving marimba line that immediately disappears into a cavern of echoing, wordless gasps and gobs of digital detritus, right until the moment Ken reveals a rivulet of running water. Just when “Uzume” appears to be returning to nature, playful outbursts of woodwinds and digital keys blip up, before the sound of a ticking clock takes over. If anything, it shows how quickly three minutes can morph in Ken’s peculiar soundworld, and how much he can make from the resources of his everyday life.
