J.G. Wilkes' "Jaxon" is the gruffest sort of dancefloor cut. Beating out a stiff breakbeat rhythm over buzzing synth that throbs like a low-grade hangover, it doesn't do much more than pace back and forth, stewing in its own juices. The song first appeared on Wilkes' German Pizza Party, an LP that the Optimo member created as part of an installation in his hometown of Glasgow last year. Now, remixing the song for a new EP, Cologne's Barnt takes the opposite approach, throwing open the blinds and flooding the tune with sunlight and fresh air.-=-=-=-

Per the Magazine collective co-founder's M.O., the song is at once straight-faced and kind of squirrelly, particularly when it comes to the rhythm. He's sanded Wilkes' loping breakbeat groove and snapped it to an unswerving kick drum for an effect that feels almost rudimentary (a nod, perhaps, to his own hometown's famously rigid techno cadence). Halfway through, though, he indulges in softly crashing cymbals and sends the snare drum bouncing down a dubby delay chain—a flight of fancy at odds with the otherwise buttoned-up beat. Mostly, his rework is all about the organs, an absent-minded noodling that swirls like sunlit snowflakes and sounds like Philip Glass on a bender. It's the sweetest kind of hair of the dog.
