Cleveland singer-songwriter Lorine Chia's voice could have been plucked straight from a different era, but it will strike listeners as ultra-contemporary in a certain way, thanks to Kanye West. Chia's rich rasp recalls Nina Simone (or Nina Simone recalling Billie Holiday) so strongly that she was even briefly rumored to have sung the vocals on Yeezus behemoth "Blood on the Leaves". Now she's found a way to recontextualize her vintage voice once again, riffing on the conceit of a recent Drake hit to create a slinking, shadowy tune that bridges old and modern. "No New Friends" will appear on a mixtape out this fall.
