Madd Again! brings together the Manchester deejays Killa Benz and Specialist Moss, the grime and dancehall MC Trigga, and the UK bass stalwart Zed Bias. This gang of four seems powered by the idea that Jamaican soundsystem culture was the incubator for much of modern UK dance music. Their song—especially their newest, “Brand New Dubplate”—are like little history classes on the roots of these genres.

Bias’ production, in particular, sounds like a sampling of popular dance music from the last few decades: He mixes in the womping bass of 2-step, a touch of conga from UK funky, and a swinging garage shuffle. A friendly spoken word introduction by Benz and Moss conjures up the lyrical flourishes that begin many classic Jamaican tunes. Bias goes further by sampling the BBC radio host Benji B introducing a Bugz in the Attic dub from back in 2004. Over this heady production, Benz, Moss, and Trigga’s voices mesh together well, bringing a freewheeling dancehall deejay style into conversation with grime MC technique, making for a patchwork quilt of genres. “Brand New Dubplate” isn’t just a lesson in mapping the paths from the Jamaican soundsystem to a wide range of UK bass music—with “Brand New Dubplate,” it’s obvious that Madd Again! have been studying just what makes a dance song into a jam.
