Longtime DJ/producer Statik Selektah is a classicist whose productions are tailor-made for the more old-school, lyrically obsessive rappers. His new song, “Put Jewels on It,” featuring Run the Jewels, is a straightforward bar fest. Sampling Wais P’s song of the same name, which Statik also produced, “Put Jewels on It” is the latest in his long line of traditionalist MC exhibitions, with scratched vocal snippets, searing horns, and muffled drums. This is rap boiled down to its essentials—no hook, no frills, just technicians in action. Statik’s production style is dramatically different from El-P’s—less modern, less detailed, and, frankly, less thrilling—but Run the Jewels rip through it all the same. El has some words for the establishment (as per usual), uncorking wordplay arrays like, “What a clutch, every buck he touch getting crumpled up/Suck it up, fold the fuckers guts ’til he double up.” Killer Mike chooses flash over firepower, noodling through looser material with panache. Statik Selektah counts on them to do what they always do: show-up and show out, taking on all comers.
