Khotin’s tracks are unfussy affairs of ambling, ambient dance music, where the goal is to create a vibe to curl up in, rather than a mood to shake your booty. “Aloe Drink,” the title track from the Vancouver producer’s new 12", is as rich and relaxing as day at the spa. Its power comes from the percussion: Soft thudding kickdrums, fluttering hand drums, fizzy digital bleeps carves out a snug space to nod along to. It makes “Aloe Drink” a welcoming place and a good starting point to appreciate the simplicity and craft in Khotin’s work; things that seem effortless or uncomplicated, like the glowing synths at the center of the track, get more and more vivid as you pay attention, pulsating open and closed like an oyster slowly revealing a pearl on its tongue. And perhaps that’s what makes “Aloe Drink” so pleasant: it doesn’t ask very much of its listener, other than to take a breath and appreciate the simple things.
