Though Portland psychedelic plunderers Grails' proper albums have specialized in wide-eyed eclecticism, the band has also used a series of short-run EPs called the Black Tar Prophecies as stylistic workshops where they’re able to sort through new ideas. Temporary Residence Limited has collected the most recent of those efforts on a new collection and paired it with the music intended as No. 6 in the series (out October 15). The previously unreleased  “Invitation to Ruin” nods toward the beats-and-samples curiosities of drummer Emil Amos under his Lilacs & Champagne guise. The stately guitar traces through the trance-like beat patiently, suggesting Bill Frisell loaning rehearsal tapes to DJ Shadow for a new remix project.
