Kississippi left little to the imagination with the title of their last release, 2015’s We Have No Future, We’re All Doomed. On that EP, the Philly rock band navigated anxiety and heartbreak inside restless guitar landscapes smoothed out by frontwoman Zoe Reynolds’ gossamer voice. Kississippi’s forthcoming debut album is called Sunset Blush, and the newfound confidence that Reynolds embodies on its lead single, “Cut Yr Teeth,” suggests the storm clouds that hung over We Have No Future are beginning to disperse.

“Cut Yr Teeth” isn’t exactly a kiss-off—the song’s painful backstory peeks through in lyrics like, “I’m still afraid of the dark/You were my light for so long.” Still, it finds Reynolds landing one of her most self-assured burns to date: “The person you made yourself out to be/Would feel sorry for what you’ve done to me.” Backed by a small army of her own multiplied vocals, Reynolds sounds victorious.
