The moment you hear Erick Lee's high, piping vocals on "Pins and Stitches", you're set off running through the past 40+ years of Beach Boys-influenced indie rock—insular Elephant 6 popcraft, the madcap psychedelia of Soft Bulletin-era Flaming Lips, Animal Collective's urban pastoralia. Referential for sure, but in covering about a decade per minute, Modern Rivals show a present-day curiosity towards the endless access to the past.
