Back in August, Toronto DJ Cindy Li made a few waves when, in response to a local promoter booking primarily male artists, she posted a Google doc of hundreds of potential female DJs of every genre imaginable for inclusion (and hire). Some controversy and grumbling ensued, but even without that notoriety, Li was already a prime mover in the Toronto scene, from her radio show Work-in-Progress to her work with safe-space promoting, party-throwing collective It’s Not U It’s Me.

Now, after seven years as a DJ, Li now makes her producer debut as Ciel, and her first EP, Electrical Encounters, offers up a delectable mix of crackling electro and dreamy house. “Elevate (Go Off Mix)” is the clear standout thanks to the lullaby-like kalimba plucks that underpin the track. There’s a tension to the song, by turns meandering and tightening up, thanks to a breakbeat that manages to be both jittery and mellow at once. Rather than push, Li seems to guide “Elevate” along, her twinkling keys weightlessly hover above the tumbling beat. Lei’s DJ acumen is such that the track slowly becomes unmoored like a balloon, the track winding up high above the clouds.
