The Philly rapper finds her pocket amid the gloom with louche, menacing bars

Philly-born rapper Chynna, in her own words, makes music “for angry people with too much pride to show how angry they are.” So it makes sense that the 24-year-old is at her best when the mood on a track is decidedly grim, as on her new single “Xternal Locus.” She joins forces with French singer and producer Oklou, who provides a glowering and unsettling background that seesaws between layered strings, pitch-shifted vocals, and disjointed beats. Still, Chynna easily finds her pocket amid the gloom with louche, menacing bars to match: “My new rotation with finery/New location, can’t find ya, ay,” she raps in a fast-moving, hushed flow that borders on stream-of-consciousness. “I still sneak up behind ya, ay/Lung get crushed, you get lined up.” With Oklou’s strange, spacious backdrop conjuring up images of dark street corners and even darker intentions, Chynna invites listeners into an ominous headspace while simultaneously making it sound like the coolest place on earth.
