“Shape” is the first new song from Glasser since her 2010 debut album Ring, and it doesn’t so much introduce a new sound as perform a sonic exorcism. Gone are the meandering harmonies and circling rhythms; in their place sprouts steely yet poetic purpose. “My home has no shape/ Nothing to sustain me/ But it keeps me safe from imagined pain,” she sings, her glacial vocal providing the melody that swims above ear-engulfing boom bass and click-whir kick drum. Her voice rises clean above the choppy ocean of sound with skin-prickling magnitude. “There are so many beginnings and endings and edges and shores inside and outside our minds,” she recently wrote in an intriguing statement on her website. The sheer power and lyrical drama of “Shape” points to an artist fully engaging with those beginnings and endings.
