Taken from Benjamin John Power’s upcoming album World Eater
The cover of Blanck Mass’ forthcoming album, World Eater, is a close-up of man’s best friend, Canis familiaris, baring its teeth. Its second single, “Silent Treatment,” doubles down on that image’s core warning: Our pets, our loved ones hold the power to hurt us in ways we never could have imagined. Here, Benjamin John Power (half of the electronic duo Fuck Buttons) weaponizes jagged shards of euphoric instrumentals, piles on samples of disembodied vocals, and ratchets up the tempo until the song’s intensity reaches an uncomfortable extreme. At its peak, the song evokes the feeling of a dance floor freak-out, pleasure suddenly giving way to existential fear. As per its title, “Silent Treatment” offers us no reassuring answers.
