Glasgow electronic label LuckyMe is nearly done with seventh annual Advent Calendar, a series running December 27 through January 6 that collects rare and exclusive tracks by artists in its orbit. So far, it's run a stylistic gamut from Hudson Mohawke's brooding rework of John Carpenter's "Escape from New York" theme to S-Type's post-trap roof-burner "NYE."-=-=-=-

Typical of Berlin footwork enigma DJ Paypal, his contribution "No One Else" sits at an odd angle from its surroundings in both sound and mood. Its verses use chiming synths, stuttering beats, and a sample of Luther Campbell-affiliated R&B trio Anquette's 1989 single "I Will Always Be There for You" to sketch some breezily blunted psychedelia, before unleashing a barrage of footwork drums that evoke the style’s earliest, rawest days. It might be the best track yet to showcase Paypal’s talent for throwing huge, whiplash changes at listeners that somehow, in their own arcane way, make perfect sense.
