The Melbourne pop-rocker Alex Lahey excels at writing exuberant songs about rejection, and on “Lotto in Reverse”—off her debut album, I Love You Like a Brother—she uses a long-distance heartbreak to remind herself that she’s better off alone. It’s an outwardly dark tale brought to life by a slinking bass line and an explosive chorus of minor-key changeups, the whole of which creeps forward with equal parts irritation and sorrow. “Now you’ve got your back to me/I just want to go home,” Lahey sings. “Am I scared of losing you or am I scared to be alone?” Blame it on the Australian accent or the biting penmanship, but her voice recalls the best of Courtney Barnett, her wry confidence still standing in the face of personal disaster. With “Lotto in Reverse,” Lahey barrels through menacing rock with a sneer beneath her smile, throwing fists at the person who did her wrong.
