Mike Jones may have reached AMBER Alert levels of scarcity following 2004's career-making "Still Tippin", but his former Swishahouse labelmate Paul Wall's managed to stick around for a solid decade. The People's Champ is 34 now, and on his latest album Slab God, he doesn't bend over backwards for cool points or club ubiquity. He's doing exactly what he needs to do: tasteful Houston car culture devotionals, captured best on lead single "Swangin in the Rain". Over a screwed-down Shalamar sample, Wall celebrates slab culture—big-body Cadillacs with the candy paint, '84 rims, maybe a wood-grain wheel or a trunk with the neon lights inside. It's essentially the grown-up, chilled out reprisal to "Sittin Sidewayz" a decade later. Even better than a comeback: when you never really left to begin with.
