Vatican Shadow's September Cell 12", out June 18 in an editon of 700, is the first release on Dominick Fernow's new Boomkat-backed imprint, Bed of Nails. If you haven't caught any of the project's other limited-edition releases, Vatican Shadow project is Fernow channeling old industrial and minimal techno music, blending it with the frozen electronic elements of some of his "later" Prurient recordings-- notably, 2006's Pleasure Ground, last year's Bermuda Drain and Time's Arrow, and the dirtier details he adds to Cold Cave-- and then, usually, wrapping it in cover art that fittingly reminds me of Muslimgauze.

Fernow recently shuttered his New York-based Hospital Productions metal/noise record shop and relocated to Los Angeles. You get a sense of that city's cavernous downtown in the new EP's dark spaciousness, something not as apparent when he was situated in the East Village. You'll hear that, and also get a sense of the political bent, via "Cairo Is a Haunted City".
