On their second new single of the year, noise-pop quartet Empath set up a dismal juxtaposition. “Hanging Out of Cars” epitomizes the blown-out noise-pop technique perfected on last year’s breakthrough “The Eye,” and this latest cut from the band’s forthcoming full-length debut feels just as exhilarating. When the discord briefly pauses, it reveals a rare moment of intelligibility from vocalist Catherine Elicson: “Where I take you is where I take myself/That empty space is the most I’ve ever felt,” she yelps. Suddenly, the synths and drums drop out, giving way to a cosmic, ominous fade-out that lasts through the song’s second half. It feels bizarrely purposeful—as if Empath has granted listeners an empty space of their own.
